Troop 97 is a historical troop, and dates back to the early days of Boy Scouting in America. We are currently a medium sized troop in Huntsville, TX. Scouts from Troop 97 typically advance in ranking each year and earn the Eagle award on a regular basis. Our weekly meetings focus on learning opportunities for the scouts and mastery of skills. We also have outings and camping trips, help with service projects and have a lot of fun too!
Here are some items the troop could use:
- Metal ammo boxes – waterproof
- Rope / Canopy ties / Bungee straps
- Zip ties, various lengths
Meetings are held at:
Josey Boy Scout Lodge
2201 Sam Houston Avenue
Huntsville, TX 77340
We meet from 7:00-8:30pm on Tuesday nights when Huntsville ISD classes are in session and alternating weeks during the summer break. Please visit our calendar for more information about the troop schedule.
The scouts in Troop 97 earn Merit Badges each year. Merit badges are awards earned by the scouts, based on activities within an area of study, by completing a list of requirements. The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow the scouts to examine subjects and determine if they would like to further pursue these topics. Visit Boy Scout Trail to learn about the merit badges.
Ray Scheel is the Scoutmaster for Troop 97. TJ Harris and Jeremiah Ritzenthaler are Assistant Scoutmasters. Andrea Scheel is the Committee Chair. David Clake, Leigh Champion, and Will Woodlief are Committee Members. The leaders in our troop are fully trained and most of the leaders are professionally qualified and approved Merit Badge Counselors for SHAC.
Troop 97 has an outing or camping trip most months during the school year. The outings are typically day trips to an interesting or historical place. For the camping trips, we usually leave on Friday evening and return on Sunday. Our past camping trips have focused on rock climbing, caving, biking, hiking and canoeing. We participate regularly in events like the God and Country Retreat and Sam Houston State University’s Merit Badge Day. Our troop attends a week-long summer camp every year, having fun and earning numerous merit badges. We also participate in troop fundraising events, such as selling popcorn and Scout Fair coupon books, and service projects that benefit the local community.
